Common Pests We Treat in Ontario
Detailed identification and threat information for the most common household pests in Ontario.
🦟 Centipede
- Length: 13–40 mm
- Colour: Greyish-yellow to dark brown
- Features: One pair of legs per body segment
The house centipede is the most common species in Ontario, found in damp basements and crawl spaces. While centipedes rarely bite, their venom can cause reactions similar to a wasp sting. They thrive in moist environments and indicate excess moisture in your home.
🐟 Silverfish
- Length: 10–15 mm
- Colour: Silvery-grey, metallic scales
- Features: Wingless, torpedo-shaped body
Silverfish are nocturnal insects that prefer humid, dark areas. They feed on starchy materials — including wallpaper paste, book bindings, glue, and food items. Damage appears as irregular holes in paper, fabrics, and stored goods. They can also trigger allergic reactions.
🕷️ Spiders
- Northern Black Widow: 16 mm, shiny black with red markings
- Brown Recluse: 12 mm, brown with violin-shaped marking (rare in Ontario)
- Features: 8 legs, 2 body sections
Most spiders in Ontario are harmless and nocturnal, hiding in cool, dark corners. However, the Northern Black Widow — and rarely, the Brown Recluse — can deliver medically significant bites. Large spider populations inside a home are often a sign of other pest activity — spiders follow their food source.
🦗 Fleas
- Length: Adults up to 3 mm
- Colour: Brown to blackish (adult)
- Features: Wingless, powerful jumping legs
Cat fleas, dog fleas, and rat fleas are the most common species found in Ontario homes. Fleas bite humans and pets, causing intense itching and potential allergic reactions. They can transmit tapeworms and, in rare cases, disease. Flea eggs fall off pets and can infest carpets, bedding, and upholstery.
🐜 Sow Bugs
- Length: 13 mm
- Colour: Greyish
- Features: 7 pairs of legs, plate-like segments
Sow bugs — a type of land-dwelling crustacean — are commonly found in moist areas — basements, under debris, rocks, and wooden boards in gardens. They do not bite or sting and are not directly harmful to humans, but their presence in large numbers indoors indicates excessive moisture and may attract other predatory pests.
🐝 Wasps & Bees
- Umbrella Wasp: 15 mm, brown with yellow markings
- Yellow Jacket: 12–18 mm, black and yellow
- Honey Bee: 11–15 mm, yellowish-brown
- Bumble Bee: 12–22 mm, black and yellow
Wasps and bees nesting near your home’s entry points, eaves, or in wall voids pose a significant stinging risk. Yellow jackets are especially aggressive when disturbed. Professional nest removal is strongly recommended — never attempt to remove a wasp or bee nest yourself.
🪲 Black Carpet Beetle
- Adult: 3–5 mm, uniformly dark brown or black
- Larvae: Reddish-golden brown, long body with a tuft of long hairs at the tail end
Carpet beetles are destructive fabric pests. The larvae feed on natural fibres — wool, silk, leather, fur, and feathers — causing significant damage to carpets, clothing, and upholstered furniture. Adult beetles feed on pollen outdoors and enter homes through open windows. Infestations are often discovered only after damage is done.
🐛 Box Elder Bugs
- Colour: Black with red markings
- Season: Enter homes in late fall seeking warmth
Box elder bugs feed on box elder and maple trees outdoors, but invade homes in large numbers in the fall seeking protected overwintering sites. They squeeze through cracks around windows, doors, and foundations — particularly on south and west-facing walls. While not directly destructive, their droppings can stain fabrics and surfaces.
🪲 Earwigs
- Length: 12–25 mm
- Colour: Dark brown with reddish legs
- Features: Distinctive pincers (cerci) at abdomen
Earwigs are nocturnal scavengers that thrive in cool, moist environments. They enter homes through foundation cracks, gaps under doors, and utility line gaps. While earwigs do not cause structural damage, they damage garden plants, feed on stored pantry goods, and their presence in large numbers can be alarming to homeowners.
Our Common Pest Elimination Process
A proven, scientific approach — Detection, Elimination, Prevention & Protection (D.E.P.P.) — for complete pest removal.
Detection & Identification
Our certified technicians conduct a thorough inspection of your property to identify all pest species present, locate nesting and harborage areas, pinpoint entry points, and assess the extent of the infestation. Accurate identification is critical — different species require different treatment approaches.
Targeted Elimination
Using Health Canada-approved insecticides, we apply targeted treatments to all affected areas — including perimeter sprays, crack and crevice treatments, contact sprays, and residual applications. We select the most effective treatment method for each pest species to ensure complete elimination.
Prevention & Entry Point Sealing
We identify and advise on sealing key entry points — cracks in the foundation, gaps around pipes, unsealed vents, and door sweeps. We also recommend sanitation improvements and moisture reduction strategies that eliminate the conditions pests need to survive and reproduce.
Protection & 11-Month Warranty
We recommend an annual perimeter spray program for ongoing protection against all common pests throughout the seasons. Every treatment is backed by our industry-leading 11-month warranty — if pests return within that period, we return and re-treat at absolutely no additional charge.
