How Long Does Ant Treatment Take to Work?
By Husky Pest Control Technicians | Ontario, Canada | 4 min read
Quick Answer: Professional ant treatment begins working within 24–72 hours, with significant activity reduction visible in 1–2 weeks. Complete colony elimination typically takes 4–8 weeks depending on the ant species and colony size. Seeing more ants immediately after treatment is normal — it’s a sign the product is working.
One of the most common questions we receive after treating an ant infestation is: “Why am I still seeing ants?” Understanding how professional ant treatments work — and what a normal treatment timeline looks like — will help set realistic expectations and confirm that your treatment is on track.
Why You Might See MORE Ants Right After Treatment
This is completely normal and is actually a sign the treatment is working correctly. When professional bait products are applied, worker ants pick them up and carry them back to the colony — exposing the queen and larvae to the active ingredient. This increased foraging activity temporarily brings more ants to the surface.
With residual spray treatments, disturbed ants flee treated areas, which can make activity appear more visible in adjacent areas for 24–48 hours. Do not apply additional sprays or disturb the treated areas during this period — it will interfere with the treatment.
Treatment Timelines by Ant Species
Pavement Ants & Little Black Ants
Timeline: 1–3 weeks. These species have relatively small colonies (3,000–5,000 workers) and respond quickly to bait treatments. Most customers see 80%+ reduction within 10–14 days of a single professional treatment.
Carpenter Ants
Timeline: 4–8 weeks, often requiring 2–3 treatments. Carpenter ant colonies can contain 10,000+ workers across multiple satellite nests. The main colony may be in a rotting log or tree outside, with satellite colonies inside your home. Thorough treatment and follow-up is essential.
Pharaoh Ants
Timeline: 8–12 weeks with bait-only treatment. Pharaoh ants are the most difficult Ontario ant species to eliminate. Their colonies can contain millions of workers across hundreds of interconnected satellite nests. Never use residual sprays for Pharaoh ants — they cause “budding,” splitting the colony into dozens of new nests throughout the building. Bait-only treatment is mandatory.
Fire Ants (Rare European Fire Ants)
Timeline: 4–6 weeks per treatment cycle. European fire ants are an invasive species increasingly found in urban Ontario. They are aggressive when disturbed and can sting repeatedly. Multiple treatment cycles over the season are typically required for full suppression.
What You Should Do After Treatment
Don’t clean treated surfaces for at least 2 weeks — mopping, scrubbing, or applying surface cleaners removes residual treatments and reduces effectiveness.
Don’t apply DIY sprays over treated areas — this can repel ants away from bait stations, preventing the active ingredient from reaching the queen.
Fix moisture problems — address any leaking pipes, poor drainage, or damp wood that attracted ants in the first place.
Store food properly — seal all food in airtight containers and clean up crumbs and spills promptly to remove attractants.
Report back — if you’re still seeing significant ant activity after 3–4 weeks, contact your pest control provider. Under our 11-month warranty, Husky Pest Control returns at no charge.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does ant treatment take to work?
You will often see activity for the first few days as ants carry the product back to the colony, with a noticeable decline within one to two weeks. Fully eliminating the colony, including the queen, can take a few weeks depending on the species and colony size.
Why do I see more ants right after treatment?
A short spike is normal and usually a good sign. Slow-acting baits draw ants out and are shared through the colony before taking effect, so spraying these ants on sight can actually reduce your results.
How can I keep ants from coming back?
Keep food sealed, wipe up crumbs and spills, fix moisture problems, and seal cracks and entry points. Trimming plants and branches away from the exterior also removes pathways indoors.
